About Greenshaw High School
Greenshaw High School is a large mixed partially-selective state comprehensive in Sutton, in the London Borough of Sutton, and part of the Greenshaw Learning Trust. It is a state-funded school that charges no fees. Most Year 7 places are allocated as a normal comprehensive (by proximity), but up to 60 places are reserved for a selective ‘ability’ stream allocated on the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET) — the same first-stage test used by Sutton's grammar schools, not a shared consortium test.
Greenshaw is a high-performing, heavily oversubscribed school with a broad curriculum and strong results. Only children who reach the SET qualifying standard are eligible for the 60 selective places; all other applicants are considered under the school's standard comprehensive admissions criteria.
Year 7 Admissions Guide for Greenshaw High School
Greenshaw is a partially-selective comprehensive. To be considered for one of the up to 60 selective places, a child must register for and sit the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET) — two multiple-choice papers in English and Maths (no reasoning) — and reach the qualifying standard; Greenshaw uses only the SET (there is no second-stage test). If more than 60 children qualify, selective places are offered after looked-after children, children with exceptional medical or social needs and children of staff, then by rank of SET score. All remaining Year 7 places are offered under the school's standard comprehensive criteria, by proximity to the school. Always confirm the current arrangements in the school's admissions policy.
Academic Performance at Greenshaw High School (GCSE & A-Level Results)
As a large, mostly non-selective Sutton academy (with a small selective band), Greenshaw achieves strong results, with pupils typically making above-average progress for their starting points.
- GCSE: pupils generally make above-average progress (a positive Progress 8 score — in 2022, close to half a grade more than the national average).
- A-Level/Sixth form: a strong sixth form with a high value-added score, and a large proportion of leavers progressing to university (including many to leading universities).
- Progression: strong progression to higher education.
Exam results change annually, so always confirm the latest published figures on the school’s website.
Catchment Area for Greenshaw High School
Greenshaw does not operate a catchment area. For the selective stream, places are offered by rank of SET score regardless of where a child lives; for the comprehensive places, priority is by proximity to the school (straight-line distance), not a fixed catchment.
Because there is no catchment, children from across and beyond the borough can apply for a selective place; in practice the comprehensive places go to families living closest to the school. Reaching the SET standard does not guarantee a selective place, as more children typically qualify than there are places.

Opened in 1968 as a purpose-built comprehensive, Greenshaw High School is a large co-educational academy (ages 11–18) on Grennell Road in Sutton, south London, with the motto ‘Committed to Excellence’. It became an academy in 2011 and is the founding and lead school of the Greenshaw Learning Trust (a multi-academy trust formed in 2014), serving a diverse local community through its purposeful ‘Big Ideas’ curriculum.
